How was your experience at the eCommerce Expo in London?
The experience at eCommerce London was great. It’s always good to see partners, merchants, ISVs, card acquirers, and even the competition, to talk about payments.
It was great to see new innovation and new topics being raised. It’s always nice to have that industry buzz. Overall, a really strong event, and a great opportunity to evangelize Aevi with everyone.
What motivated you to attend the event as an in-person payment specialist?
Great question. I think for us there are two things. First, we recognize that as Aevi, we don’t live in an isolated space. Our customers and partners either operate in in-person payments, in eCommerce, or often both. That means it’s important for us to understand the eCommerce space, stay well connected, and build partnerships and relationships that span across both.
Secondly, there is a lot of innovation happening in eCommerce, and some of that we would like to bring into the card-present world and the other way around. We see the payments industry as one big landscape. While we don’t do everything ourselves, our partners often deliver solutions that can help our clients, so it’s important for us to stay tuned into that.
Many retailers were present. What challenges did you hear about when it comes to moving from eCommerce to in-person payments?
The eCommerce space moves at a much faster pace. There is more flexibility, fewer certifications, fewer heavy integrations, and that leapfrogging has influenced what retailers now expect in in-person payments. Retailers want more flexibility, more freedom, more choice, and the kinds of options that eCommerce provides. That is exactly what we are helping to introduce into in-person payments.
Did you notice any other key observations or trends that are worth watching?
Right now, in eCommerce, it’s all about agentic commerce. Everyone is asking how they can influence agents to buy from them. It is not far-fetched to imagine a future where websites are no longer needed, and agents are simply talking to agents. That is high on everyone’s agenda.
It is ironic that we have spent the last 20 years fighting bots, only to realize that bots are going to be essential for us going forward.
Another big trend is the speed of innovation around payment methods. From Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) to account-to-account and a wide variety of local alternative payment methods, there is a real shift happening away from traditional schemes. People are rethinking how they accept payments altogether.
This is very similar to what we saw at NRF, with retailers reducing counters and making the buying experience more customer focused. For example, using tablets so shopping consultants can take payments directly instead of funneling everyone to a traditional checkout.
I would say those are my top three takeaways.
